I wanted to write a probing and meaningful post about the right to have children and the scrutiny potential adoptive parents face that biological parents never have to deal with. Example – you can be a drug addict, homeless, convict and have a biological child. You don’t have to fill out any forms, get a police clearance, have social workers in your house checking to see how fit you are or how safe it is. You have sex, you get pregnant, and you’ve got a kid.
However, I am too tired to write such a probing and meaningful post. Instead, what you get is this: It sucks to have to go through this much paperwork.
Here’s a question. The application for a National Security Clearance (“used primarily as the basis for investigation for access to classified information or special nuclear information or materials”) is 10 pages, including the release form. How long is your application?
Here’s what gets me about stuff like this: Didn’t they already investigate the heck out of you before admitting you to the bar? Can’t they just say “Wow, this person is an officer of the court, how bad could she be?”
The application for adoption is multi-step. First, you have to send in the application to the agency. Then, you have to get approval from CIS, then you have to gather every official document you’ve ever had in your life, get them notarized by local, city, county and state. After you’ve done that you have a homestudy and they scrutinize your house, your lifestyle, your closet organization skills. You need to write an autobiography about yourself, how you met your spouse, and why you want to adopt.
After all of that, you send everything to CIS to see if you are approved. If you are, then the agency sends everything to China. Then in China they review everything again.
It really is crazy. But, IVF ain’t no picknic either.
Wow. That’s a lot of work.
When I first started reading your stuff you had just moved and nothing seemed to be happening in your life. Now life is busting out all over.
Good luck with everything.
And then you still here these stories about abusive foster parents starving their kids and stuff.
Well, if it’s any help, I’ll gladly be a reference for you.
Just heard your good news, congratulations, it is a great adventure. If you need any info or advice please feel free to stop by my blog or email me. I am an old pro at international adoption. Good Luck.
