Been there, done that. I didn’t lose hours of work, but I’ve got two degrees in Computer Science and 20 years experience, so I should have known better.
You might want to consider using blogrolling.com. You build and store your blogroll at their site, and just add some script to your site to display it. If you change templates, just re-add the script. Nothing gets lost.
Unless Blogrolling.com goes out of business, then you and 100,000 other people lose their blogrolls, but at least you’ll have company.
