Things went okay in court yesterday after all. Well, okay being a relative term. My client got exactly twelve months and while I let out a huge sigh of relief, he looked at me like I had just sent him to the gas chamber. So, I had to have yet another conversation with him about how he really lucked out and how this is the best thing that he could have expected blah blah blah. Then he asked”well, what if I had paid that other law firm $30,000.00, what would have happened then?” Umm. . . . well, you would’ve been screwed out of $30,000.00??

I am one of those lawyers that takes on assigned cases when a judge asks me to. I take them and, eventually, I bill them out, but I don’t feel any huge rush because I don’t rely primarily on court appointed cases. Maybe for this reason I don’t really care if a client wants to hire a ‘real’ lawyer. In fact, I encourage it. I had one assigned client go to see another criminal defense attorney who is a good friend of mine. When the client told my friend that I was his lawyer, my pal laughed and said, don’t waste your money – you’ve got one hell of a lawyer. I called my friend and asked him why he didn’t take the case!! TAKE IT!! It’s not like the guy is going to be greatful even if I get the thing tossed. I’m not a REAL lawyer in his eyes. Well, lo and behold, the client’s case was dismissed (it was a felony gun possession) so I guess he got his money’s worth, right?

Ask me how many times he said thank you.
