We’ve been busy at Law Firm by the Bay. I’ve been handling the finances and writing memos and the others have been trying cases and putting on the ritz. At first I was a bit hesitant about this division of labor, but I find that it has a nice rhythm to it and we are falling into these roles with such ease that it feels like it was meant to be. I thought I would be resistant to the idea of being in the office, doing the behind the scenes work while the other two went out and looked glamorous and got all the glory, but I find that I’m really enjoying it. I mean, Steven Spielberg isn’t in front of the camera, but folks know who he is, right?

Last week said law firm had a pretty important win in a murder case. Partner 1 had a hearing on a motion to suppress a photo array. Without the array, the state’s case was pretty much shot (no pun intended, really)- the victims in the case insisted that the reason they picked out our client was due to the suggestiveness of the array. Partner and I sat down, talked, I looked up cases, wrote a memo, and sent him on his way. While the prosecutor was a formidable opponent, his case just didn’t hold up; Partner 1 did a stellar job, the court suppressed the photo array and the case was subsequently dismissed.

By the way, I have to write complimentary things about the state since I know of one state’s attorney who reads this blog and then tells people what I write, so please take any and all niceties about the dark side with a grain of salt. I shouldn’t be too horribly concerned that this person reads this, I mean, how seriously can you take someone who has a penchant for Garfield? However, knowing this has hampered my ability to be forthright and candid in this space. I suppose some measure of discretion is preferable, so maybe its good that Garfield Man is keeping me on my toes.
